Global Warming

What is global warming??
As many people do not know, global warming is the observed increase in the average temperature of the Earth's atmosphere and oceans in recent decades. Generally, it is a result of human activities that contribute in forming harmful gases in the air. In a way, the global warming is slightly rising the sea level day after day which threatens the villages' existence close the beach. Apparently, the municipality has to maintain the safety of the citizens. Above all of this, did people know that global warming could be stopped so they could sustain their homes? People are not paying full attention to global warming because it is sort of a new issue. Some of them do not realize how dangerous global warming effects could be. Others find it boring to read through any article related to geography. Global warming has a short history which people must know. Awareness of causes of global warming such as greenhouses gases as the main reason and carbon dioxide is needed. Additionally, awareness of effects of global warming such as environmental disasters and rising sea level is a must.
Causes of global warming:
In 1897, a Swedish chemist called Svante Arrhenius thought about some causes of global warming but his discovery grabbed attention only 90 years later. Fortunately, instrumental measurements existed earlier in 1800. Global warming started its function around that time. Before 1850, World's temperature was stable comparing to our time. During 1860–1900, global temperatures on both land and sea have increased by 0.75 °C (1.4 °F) according to Instrumental Temperature Records. Recent statistics tell that the years 1998 and 2005 witnessed the warmest climate since reliable (UK Climate Research Unit, NASA).
Greenhouse gases (GHGs) are gaseous components of the atmosphere that contribute to the greenhouse effect. Some of greenhouse gases occur naturally in the atmosphere while others are results of human activities. Human activities increase the danger of naturally composed gases. The most common and effective gas among greenhouse gases is Carbon Dioxide (CO2). Burning fossil fuels such as coal and petroleum is the leading cause of increased man-made CO2; deforestation is the second major cause. Global Warming Theory indicates that increasing amounts of CO2 in the atmosphere enhance greenhouse gases and thus contributes to global warming. The increased CO2 in the atmosphere warms the Earth's surface and leads to melting of ice near the poles. As the ice melts, land or open water takes its place. Both land and open water are less reflective than ice, and so absorb more solar radiation which causes more warming (www.wikipedia.org).
Effects of global warming:
The effects of global warming are many and various. It affects ecosystems, impact on glaciers, sea level, plus effects on finance and it helps in spreading killing diseases. Some animals species might extinct or be forced out of their habitats because of the changing conditions of the climate. Researchers at Bristol University have discovered that a mere 6 degrees of global warming was enough to devastate up to 95 % of the species ("Global Warming threatens…"). Global warming leads to an instable glacier balance causing glacier retreat. Dyurgerov and Meier (2005) averaged glacier data across large-scale regions (e.g. Europe) and found that every region had a net decline from 1960 to 2002, though a few local regions (e.g. Scandinavia) have shown increases. World Glacier Monitoring Services reported 90% retreating glaciers since 1995. Glaciers are exposed to melt as a result of global warming. Melting glaciers increase oceans and sea water leading to water expansion above the land. Apparently, sea level is significantly rising. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) predicts that sea level is going to rise many meters over the millennia. IPCC also estimated that over 200 million people could be affected especially in Vietnam, Bangladesh, China, India, Thailand, Philippines, Indonesia and Egypt. According to the world's two largest insurance companies' research, climate change could cost the world US$150 billion per year for the next decade. Those costs come from insurance of lost or destroyed properties of civilians. Global worming plays a big role in spread of killing diseases. Other words, the warmer the weather, the more production rate of mosquitoes. It's common that mosquitoes convey infectious diseases such as malaria. Global warming has been implicated in the recent spread to the north Mediterranean region of bluetongue disease in domesticated ruminants associated with mite bites (Purse, 2005).
Stop global warming:
It is urgent that the whole world should take a serious action towards stopping global warming causes after all of the above effects. Otherwise, instead of investing a little bit of global GDP, a large percent of it is going to be lost in reconstruction processes after all. The new science has found many ways to replace the one that has been used nowadays which produces greenhouse gases that lead to climate change. First action to be taken is reducing the use of energy or using different energy techniques such as solar power, nuclear power, electric, fuel cells or energy conservation. Carbon that goes out of factories should be captured and stored in a place where it cannot affect the weather. Carbon-based fossil fuels can be replaced with alternative sources that have less effect on global climate. Logically, plants cool down the weather, so more plants should be here and there and everywhere to spread a cool air on this earth.
